Animal

What did we lose

limping out of our garden,

away from our original continent?

Nature is so still and so innocent

in its violence.

The lion mauls and then naps.

So the world placed a fear in us:

adapt, adapt, adapt.

Nature taught us

the supremacy of change.

For our flexibility, we gained

anxiety. We built fear into a maze,

worry laid on top of worry.

The forgotten animal in us

howls up through the body.

We hear it from a distance, too far

into the mind to find an exit.

The animal knows what we need.

It wants to show us the way out.

If it must, it will stalk, disable,

and drag us back down

into our forgotten home.

May it find us quickly.
